One label and brand that is near and dear to us, located in Sunny Southern California, Vitamin A Swimwear was founded in 2000 by designer Amahlia Stevens. Amahlia, a California native, grew up on the beaches and lived in bikinis. She earned her degree in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and designed for top brands around the world. Prior to launching Vitamin A, Amahlia worked on a design project with Yvon Chouirnard, the founder of Patagonia and a leader in the Environmental movement. During her time with Yvon, she learned how he was changing the outdoor industry by creating technical fabrics from recycled plastic bottles. She was determined to do something similar with swimwear and while researching her options, was told time and time again by fabric suppliers that there was 'no market' for swimwear made from recycled fibers. She decided to design it herself and worked for three years with the top mills in Italy, Canada and California to perfect the process, introducing EcoLux, the first premium swim fabric that combines sustainability and technology, creating a fabric that fits like a second skin. Since then, Amahlia's vision has now become an industry standard and goal. Vitamin A also employs waterless digital printing and also uses other sustainable materials in their beachwear like Linen, organic cotton and polyester fiber made from recycled plastic bottoms.
